Aggro, Tempo, or Control? Which Deck Archetype Tells Your Story?

In the world of the Lorcana TCG, your deck is more than just a pile of sixty cards, it is your voice at the table. Whether you prefer to rush your opponent down, disrupt their every move, or outlast them until the late game, your chosen strategy defines how you interact with the Great Illuminary.

Understanding the three fundamental TCG archetypes, Aggro, Tempo, and Control is the first step toward becoming a Master Illumioneer. Let’s break down which ink pairings execute these strategies best.

1. Aggro: The Sprinter

The Story: "I’m here for a good time, not a long time."

Aggro (short for Aggressive) decks are built for speed. Your goal is to quest for lore as fast as possible, overwhelming your opponent before they have the chance to set up their "engines." You play low-cost characters with high lore values and force your opponent to play catch-up from turn one.

  • Top Ink Pairing: Ruby/Amber

  • Why it works: Amber provides "bodyguards" and cheap characters like Lilo - Making a Wish, while Ruby offers "Haste" (Rush) and the ability to remove threats that stand in your way.

  • Best for you if: You enjoy fast-paced games and winning before your opponent even gets to their six-ink cards.

2. Tempo: The Puppet Master

The Story: "You play the game on my terms."

Tempo is about efficiency. A Tempo player builds their own board while simultaneously bouncing, exhausting, or disrupting the opponent’s board. You aren't necessarily "faster" than Aggro, but you make your opponent "slower" by making their plays inefficient.

  • Top Ink Pairing: Emerald/Amethyst

  • Why it works: Emerald is the king of disruption with "Return to Hand" effects, while Amethyst provides incredible card draw and the ability to exert opposing characters. Together, they keep the opponent off-balance.

  • Best for you if: You like tricks, mind games, and the feeling of always being one step ahead of your opponent’s plan.

3. Control: The Architect

The Story: "If I survive the start, I win the end."

Control decks are the "long-haul" strategies. In the early game, you focus on "controlling" the board removing every threat your opponent plays and ramping up your inkwell. Once the board is clear, you drop massive, game-ending characters.

  • Top Ink Pairing: Sapphire/Steel

  • Why it works: Sapphire allows you to "ramp" (put extra cards into your inkwell), and Steel provides heavy-hitting removal like Grab Your Sword to wipe out threats.

  • Best for you if: You are patient and love the feeling of inevitable victory in the late game.

Grow and Glow

Glow: You have successfully mastered a specific archetype's identity, allowing you to build decks with a clear and consistent speed for the first time.

Grow: You must now learn to anticipate your archetype's natural counters and adjust your playstyle mid-game to survive your most difficult matchups.

Which one are you?

Choosing an archetype often comes down to your personality. Do you like the thrill of the chase (Aggro), the satisfaction of a perfectly executed trap (Tempo), or the power of an unstoppable machine (Control)?

Pro Tip: Most players start with Aggro because it is straightforward, but don't be afraid to experiment! Sometimes the ink pairing you least expect ends up telling the best story.
