The Pokémon Trading Card Game has been around for decades, but if you’re just diving in, there’s never been a better time. Whether you’re collecting, battling, or doing both, the TCG offers one of the most fun and interactive ways to connect with the Pokémon world.
Walking into a store filled with different boxes, tins, and packs can be overwhelming. What's the difference between a simple pack and a huge Elite Trainer Box? And which one should you buy first?
We've broken down the core products of the Pokémon TCG to help you start your journey confidently!

🥇 What Should I Buy First?
Events & Booster Packs & Community Play
While buying a single pack for collecting is great, Booster Packs often serve as the entry ticket to official TCG events at local game stores (LGS).
Pre-Release Events
Before a new set officially launches, LGSs hold Pre-Release events. For an entry fee (often around $30 - depending on your area), you receive a special Pre-Release kit containing several Booster Packs and a fixed set of cards. You then build a small deck on the spot and play against others. This is one of the most exciting ways to experience a new set!
Booster Drafts
Some local meet-ups host Booster Drafts, where the entry fee covers the cost of a few packs (usually three). You open a pack, pick one card, and pass the rest around to build a playable deck. It's a fun, low-stakes way to practice strategy and meet the community.
These in-person events highlight why the physical TCG remains so popular. To decide if playing in-store is right for you, check out our comparison: Pokémon TCG Live vs. In-Store Play: What’s Best for You.

🌟 Grow & Glow
Starting your Pokémon TCG journey with the right foundation helps you grow into a stronger player and smarter collector. Structured products like Battle Decks or Elite Trainer Boxes give you the essentials for play, while Booster Packs help you expand and experiment. As you learn to play with your new gear, you’ll glow with confidence, whether you’re making your first big play or pulling a highly sought-after Secret Rare. The game isn’t just about the cards you play; it’s about the skills and memories you make along the way.
Tip #1: Always Sleeve Your Hits! As soon as you pull a valuable or rare card, protect it with one of the sleeves from your Elite Trainer Box!
Tip #2: Don't Forget the Basics. If you want to jump straight into playing, check out a simple Battle Deck first, then grab an ETB later for the accessories and extra packs!
